How Often To Water Bamboo?

Water newly planted bamboo every 2 to 3 days for the first month. After that, give it a deep soak once or twice a week, about 1 inch of water in total. Bamboo in pots dries out faster and often needs water every 2 to 3 days in summer.

Bamboo should be watered once or twice a week once it is settled in, and every 2 to 3 days while it is new. It grows very fast, so it drinks a lot. It likes soil that stays a little moist, but it hates soggy ground.

How do you know when bamboo needs water?
Look at the leaves. When bamboo is thirsty, the leaves roll up along their length to save water. A little curling on a hot afternoon is normal. If the leaves are still curled in the cool morning, water right away.
You can also check the soil. Push a finger about 2 inches down near the base. If it feels dry, it is time to water.
How to water bamboo the right way
- Water slowly at the base. A soaker hose or a slow trickle lets water sink in instead of running off.
- Soak the whole root area. Bamboo roots spread wide but stay in the top 12 to 20 inches of soil.
- Add mulch. Two to three inches of mulch, or the fallen bamboo leaves, keep the soil cool and moist.
- Check for puddles. If water sits on top for hours, the spot drains poorly and the roots can rot.

A few yellow leaves in spring are normal. Bamboo drops old leaves as new ones grow.
Does bamboo in pots need more water?
Yes. A pot holds only a small amount of soil, and bamboo has a lot of leaves pulling water out. Check potted bamboo every day or two in summer and water until it drains from the bottom. If it dries out in a day, the pot is full of roots and it is time to divide or repot.
