Quick answer

Water basil when the top inch of soil feels dry. That usually means every 2 to 3 days for basil in pots, daily during hot spells, and 1 to 2 deep waterings a week for basil in garden beds. Basil likes steady moisture but never soggy soil.

Basil is one of the thirstier herbs you can grow. Unlike rosemary or thyme, which love dry soil, basil wants to stay evenly moist. Let it dry out too far and the leaves droop and turn bitter. Keep it waterlogged and the stems rot. Aim for soil that feels like a wrung-out sponge.

How to tell when basil needs water

Touch the soil every day or two. If the top inch feels dry, water. Basil also tells you clearly when it is thirsty: the leaves go soft and the whole plant droops. It usually perks back up within an hour of a good drink.

Do not wait for the droop. Basil that wilts often becomes stressed, which can push it to flower early. Once basil flowers, the leaves turn less sweet. Water a little before it gets to that point.

How to water basil

  1. Water at the base. Wet leaves are prone to fungal problems like downy mildew.
  2. Water deeply. In pots, water until it drains from the bottom. In beds, soak the soil several inches down.
  3. Water in the morning. The plant is hydrated for the hottest part of the day and any splashes dry quickly.
  4. Mulch outdoor basil. A thin layer of straw or compost keeps the soil from drying out between waterings.

Signs of overwatering and underwatering

Too much water

  • Yellow lower leaves
  • Black or mushy stems near the soil
  • Wilting even though the soil is wet
  • Fungus gnats around the pot

Too little water

  • Droopy, soft leaves
  • Dry, crispy leaf edges
  • Early flowering
  • Small, tough leaves with a bitter taste

Supermarket basil needs special care

Potted basil from the grocery store is usually a dozen or more seedlings crammed into one small pot. The roots compete for water and dry out very fast. Split the clump into three or four smaller groups and repot each one. They will need less frequent watering and grow much bigger.

Basil watering FAQ

Should I water basil every day?

Only if it is in a small pot or in hot, sunny weather. Otherwise, check the soil and water when the top inch is dry.

Can basil grow in water?

Basil cuttings root easily in a glass of water. Once they have roots a couple of inches long, move them into soil for longer-lasting plants.

Why is my basil wilting after watering?

If the soil is wet and the plant still wilts, the roots may be rotting from too much water. Let the soil dry out more and make sure the pot drains well.
