Water all your plants deeply the day before you leave, move them out of direct sun and group them together. For trips up to a week, that is often enough. For longer trips, use a wick system, self-watering spikes, a bathtub with wet towels, or ask a friend to water once a week.

To water plants while on vacation, give them a deep drink before you go, move them out of strong sun and use a simple self-watering trick. The right method depends on how long you will be away and what kind of plants you have.
Which method works for how long?
| Trip length | Best method |
|---|---|
| Up to 1 week | Deep water, move out of sun, group plants |
| 1 to 2 weeks | Wicks, water spikes or the bathtub trick |
| 2 weeks or more | Self-watering pots, drip timer or a plant sitter |
| Succulents and cacti | Usually fine for 2 to 3 weeks with no help |
7 easy ways to water plants while you are away
- Water deeply the day before. Soak each pot until water drains out. Let the extra drain away so roots do not sit in water.
- Move plants out of direct sun. Less light means less water used. A spot a few feet back from a window is perfect.
- Group plants together. Plants close together keep the air around them more humid, so they lose less water.
- Try the bathtub trick. Lay a few wet towels in the tub, add an inch of water and set pots with drainage holes on top. The soil soaks up water from below.
- Make a wick. Push one end of a cotton string into the soil and put the other end in a jar of water. The string slowly pulls water into the pot.
- Use water spikes or globes. Fill them, push them into the soil, and they release water slowly over several days.
- Ask a friend. For long trips, one visit a week makes a big difference. Leave simple notes for each plant.
What about garden and outdoor plants?
Water the garden deeply the morning before you leave. Add a thick layer of mulch to hold the moisture in. For longer trips in summer, a soaker hose or drip line on a cheap battery timer is the best solution. Pots outside dry out fastest, so move them into the shade and group them close together.

Do plastic bags help plants while on vacation?
Yes. A clear plastic bag over a small plant traps moisture like a mini greenhouse. Keep it out of direct sun.
Does the bottle trick work?
Yes. An upside-down water bottle with a few small holes in the cap can water a pot slowly for a few days.
